About Mini Metro

Mini Metro is a minimalist strategy puzzle about designing a subway network under pressure. You start with a few stations and a couple of train lines, and as a city grows, new stations keep appearing. Your job is to draw and redraw the lines connecting them so passengers can always reach their destinations — before any single station overflows with people waiting and forces a game over.

What looks like a clean, elegant map is really a constant optimisation problem. Passengers appear at stations wanting to travel to specific shapes — a circle passenger wants any circle station, a triangle wants a triangle — and they ride your lines to get there. As the city sprawls, demand shifts, hubs get congested, and you have to reroute lines, add trains, and spend limited weekly resources (extra lines, carriages, tunnels, interchanges) to keep everything flowing. One poorly-connected hub can back up and end an otherwise perfect run.

The brilliance is how much tension it wrings from such a calm presentation. There's no combat, no timer bar screaming at you — just a slowly rising pressure as passengers accumulate and you scramble to reengineer your network on the fly. Every decision is a trade-off: a direct line is efficient but inflexible; a big loop is robust but slow. Real-world city maps (London, New York, Tokyo and more) each bring their own geography and rivers to route around.

Mini Metro rewards elegant, forward-thinking design and punishes sprawl, which makes each game a satisfying little lesson in systems thinking. Runs build slowly and end decisively, and you'll immediately want to try again with a better plan.

How to play Mini Metro

Controls. Mouse-driven: click and drag from one station to another to draw a line; drag along a line to extend or reroute it, and drag a line off a station to remove that leg. Use the resource icons (lines, trains, tunnels, carriages) at the bottom to upgrade your network as the city grows.

Tips:

• Build for flexibility, not just the shortest path — a network you can reroute survives longer than a rigid one.
• Watch station shapes: connect a variety of shapes on each line so passengers have somewhere to go.
• Spend your weekly upgrades on trains and interchanges before hubs start backing up, not after.
• A single overloaded station ends the game — react to the first sign of congestion instead of waiting.
