2048 is the deceptively simple sliding puzzle that ate the internet in 2014 and never quite let go. The rules fit in one sentence: swipe to slide every tile in one direction, identical numbers merge, and your goal is to combine tiles up to 2048. The hard part is doing it without filling the board and locking yourself out.

The genius of 2048 is the tension between two competing pressures. Every move adds a new 2 or 4 to the board, so the longer you play the more crowded it gets. But every merge frees a tile and doubles a value. Skilled players keep the board ordered — biggest tile in a corner, descending values along the edge — so merges cascade and the board never fills.

Reaching 2048 the first time takes most players a few hours of practice. After that, the metagame starts: 4096, 8192, and the truly absurd 16384 are theoretically possible but require near-perfect play across hundreds of moves. The current world record is 131,072 — a single tile so large the game has to scale the font down to fit it.

There's no time pressure, no scoring beyond your own tile values, and no losing condition except running out of moves. That's why 2048 became the universal procrastination game: low stakes, infinite depth, one more move always feels reasonable.

How to play 2048

Controls. Arrow keys or WASD — slide all tiles in that direction. On mobile, swipe in any direction. That's the entire control scheme — there's no select, no deselect, every move shifts every tile.

Tips:

• Pick a corner (most pros use bottom-left) and never let your highest tile leave it. Build your largest values along one edge.
• Avoid using the "up" direction once you commit to a bottom-corner strategy — it scrambles your column.
• When the board is nearly full, look two moves ahead. A single panicked swipe can lock you out permanently.
• Don't chase merges in the middle of the board. Edge and corner merges are the only ones that preserve your structure.
