Hollow Knight is a hand-drawn action-adventure set in Hallownest, a ruined underground kingdom of insects. You play as the Knight — a small, silent bug armed with a nail — exploring sprawling caverns, fighting deadly creatures, and uncovering a story told almost entirely through environment and brief, cryptic dialogue.

The game is a masterclass in atmosphere. Every region of Hallownest has its own visual identity, enemy set, and ambient sound — from the mushroom-lit Fungal Wastes to the neon-infected City of Tears. The art is all hand-drawn, the music composed by Christopher Larkin, and every enemy has a specific attack pattern that rewards learning.

Combat is precision-based. The nail swings in four directions; the Soul meter charges on hits and lets you cast spells or heal. Boss fights require reading attack patterns across multiple phases and committing to aggressive play when openings appear. The difficulty is high but fair — every death teaches something.

Exploration is the heart of the game. Hallownest is massive — 40+ hours for a first playthrough — and the map fills in as you travel. Charms collected through exploration let you customise your build. Discovering a new area, finding a hidden passage, or beating a boss after ten attempts delivers genuine satisfaction.

How to play Hollow Knight

Controls. Arrow keys / WASD — move. Z / Space — jump (double jump unlocked later). X — attack with nail. C — cast spell (costs Soul). A — dash (unlocked via upgrade). S / Down — drop through platforms. Enter — open map/inventory.

Tips:

• Mark everything on your map — the game gives you pins and markers for a reason. You will get lost without them.
• Fill the Soul meter before every boss by hitting the entry enemies — you want a full heal available.
• Grubs give geo (currency) and Mask Shards give health — hunt them actively, don't assume you'll find them by chance.
• The Shaman Stone + Quick Slash charm combo turns spells into primary weapons for boss fights.
