About Tetris

Tetris is the most famous puzzle game ever made, and it's endured for one reason: the rules take ten seconds to learn and a lifetime to master. Seven differently-shaped blocks — the tetrominoes — fall one at a time into a well. You slide and rotate each piece as it drops, trying to pack them into complete horizontal rows. Fill a row and it vanishes, everything above it settling down. Let the stack climb to the top and it's game over.

The tension comes from speed. Early on the pieces drift down gently and you have all the time you need to place them. As you clear more lines the drop speed ramps up, until the well is filling faster than you can think and you're placing pieces on pure instinct. The whole game is a running negotiation between clearing rows now for safety and building up for a bigger, higher-scoring clear.

That bigger clear is the Tetris itself: wiping four rows at once by dropping a long I-piece into a carefully-kept vertical gap. It scores far more than four single clears, so skilled players deliberately leave one column open and stack nine-wide, gambling that the I-piece arrives before the stack gets dangerous. It's risk management disguised as a block puzzle.

Tetris is endlessly replayable because every game is different — the piece order is random, so you're always reacting, never memorising. It's the definitive "one more go" game: a round can last thirty seconds or fifteen minutes, and a bad start is over quickly enough that you just restart.

How to play Tetris

Controls. Left / Right arrows move the piece sideways. Up arrow or X rotates it. Down arrow soft-drops (speeds the fall); Space hard-drops (slams it straight down). Some builds add C or Shift to hold a piece for later.

Tips:

• Keep the stack flat. A bumpy surface leaves holes you can't fill; a level surface accepts almost any piece.
• Leave one column empty and stack nine-wide to set up a four-line Tetris with the long I-piece.
• Never cover a gap — a buried hole traps every row above it. Clear down to it first.
• Use hard-drop (Space) once you're sure of placement; at high speed, hesitation is what kills runs.
