Fireboy and Watergirl is the co-op puzzle platformer that turned "grab a friend and share one keyboard" into a genre staple. You control two characters at once — Fireboy, who's immune to red lava, and Watergirl, who's immune to blue water — as they work through a series of temple chambers toward their exit doors. The catch: fire kills Watergirl, water kills Fireboy, and green goo kills both. Every room is a puzzle of getting each character past the hazards that would destroy the other.

The design leans hard into cooperation and timing. Levers open doors, buttons hold platforms in place, and pushable blocks bridge gaps — but many require one character to hold a switch while the other passes, so you're constantly coordinating two sets of movements. Play it solo and you're juggling both characters on one keyboard, hands split across WASD and the arrow keys; play it with a friend and it becomes a genuine two-player teamwork test.

Beyond just reaching the exits, each level hides coloured diamonds — red for Fireboy, blue for Watergirl — and tracks your completion time. Grabbing every gem and beating the clock turns a simple "reach the door" level into an optimisation challenge, which is why the game has such replay value.

The elemental gimmick keeps the puzzles fresh across the whole Forest Temple: pools you must route the right character through, lakes you have to avoid, and lifts that only work when both characters balance them. It's approachable enough for kids and tricky enough that adults still get stuck.

How to play Fireboy and Watergirl

Controls. Fireboy: move and jump with the arrow keys. Watergirl: move and jump with A, D and W. Solo players drive both at once; with a friend, each takes one character. Fireboy walks safely through lava, Watergirl through water — never swap them.

Tips:

• Remember the rule: Fireboy dies in blue water, Watergirl dies in red lava, and green goo kills either. Route each character only through their own colour.
• Many levers and buttons need one character to hold them while the other moves — plan who waits and who goes.
• Collect the red and blue diamonds as you pass; backtracking for them wastes time on the level clock.
• Playing solo is easier if you move one character to safety first, then focus fully on the other.
